Common Questions Related to ITIN Registration Service

An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is a tax ID issued by the IRS for people who don’t qualify for a Social Security Number (SSN). It helps non-U.S. residents and foreign business owners file taxes, open U.S. bank accounts, and comply with IRS rules.

You apply for an ITIN by submitting the required documents to the IRS, and once approved, you receive your unique tax ID. It’s essential for those earning income in the U.S. but not eligible for an SSN.

Yes, you can open a U.S. bank account with an ITIN, but it depends on the bank. Some banks accept ITINs instead of an SSN, especially for non-residents.

You may also need:
✔ A passport or other valid ID
✔ A U.S. address (physical or virtual)
✔ An LLC (if opening a business account)
✔ A minimum deposit (varies by bank)

Each bank has different requirements; Payoneer for example, requires your Nadra CNIC if you are applying from Pakistan without being physically present in the US.

No, an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is not the same as an SSN (Social Security Number).

  • SSN is for U.S. citizens and authorized residents for work and benefits.
  • ITIN is for non-residents, foreign business owners, and taxpayers who don’t qualify for an SSN but need to file U.S. taxes and avail other benefits.

No, TIN (Taxpayer Identification Number) is a broader term that includes:

SSN (Social Security Number) – Issued to U.S. citizens and eligible residents for work and tax purposes.

ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) – Issued to non-residents and others who need a taxpayer number but don’t qualify for an SSN.

EIN (Employer Identification Number) – Issued to businesses for tax purposes.

You can check the validity of your ITIN by:

Looking at the expiration date – ITINs issued before 2013 and not used for three years have expired.

Contacting the IRS – Call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 (for U.S. residents) or 1-267-941-1000 (for international callers).

Checking IRS notices – The IRS sends renewal notices for expiring ITINs.

As you are well aware of the fact that every process from Pakistan to the U.S takes its due time and isn’t as swift as for our European brethren. Without further ado, ITIN, Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, a substitute for SSN (luxury item), isn’t as difficult to obtain as its counterpart (SSN). Here is a simplified version of my article to familiarize you with the ITIN obtaining process which comprises of the following steps.

First, Complete the W-7 Form and make sure you write everything picture perfectly clear and without any errors, which would surely delay your application process.

Second, you need to provide the authorities with your personalized identification documents – your foreign passport which is crucial in our case.

Third, get your personalized identification documents certified – certify them through IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC), my preferred way of doing things, or you could go to a Certifying Acceptance Agent (ACC) which is less official and unorthodox in my opinion.

Fourth, send the documents by mail, private delivery service, or personal delivery service (yourself), or through the honorable CAA if he is handling your case. Now, all you have to do is wait and watch until the process is complete and you are good to go.

No, an ITIN does not authorize you to work in the U.S. It is only for tax filing purposes. Employers require an SSN for legal employment. ITIN and SSN are two distinct identification numbers issued to distinguish between resident and non-resident for job eligibility.

A Certified Acceptance Agent (CAA) is an individual or business authorized by the IRS to help applicants verify and submit their ITIN applications. CAAs can certify identity documents, reducing the need to send original passports to the IRS. They serve the purpose of middleman and act as an intermediary for ITIN and the applicant.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) issues ITINs to individuals who meet the eligibility criteria. A legal institute working with the federal government for tax purposes.

It depends on the state. Some states allow non-citizens to get a driver’s license with an ITIN, while others require an SSN. You must check with the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) in the state where you want to apply.

A TIN (Taxpayer Identification Number) can be:
